WTC Final: India, New Zealand veterans take a dig at ICC after rain washes out Day 4 of contest: The heavens have opened up full-heartedly even on Day 4 of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) between India and New Zealand in Southampton. Following the complete wash out of yet another day’s play, Former India and New Zealand cricketers vented out their disappointments over ICC’s decision to keep only one reserve day for the WTC.
Instead, the Indian veterans VVS Laxman, Sanjay Bangar and former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond opined that instead of just a reserve day, ICC should go on to offer full 450 overs (if needed) no matter how long it takes for the World Test Championship.
In a recent interaction with Star Sports, Laxman expressed dismay on ICC’s decision. “It’s very sad for the fans. I think ICC did not get the rules right. All said and done, you want a champion,” Laxman said.
“With so much time available, I’m sure they could have at least allowed 90 overs in 5 days to complete 450 overs. That’s something I would have expected from ICC. We were excited that there is a reserve day but I’m not sure whether the game can finish (even with the reserve day) if the rain continues,” he added.
Backing the side Bond played for, he is still hopeful of draw chances or even New Zealand’s win owing to rain delays.
“If the weather delays go on for long, sometimes it means only one team can win if New Zealand bat well after the rain finishes, it puts them in the best position but I’m with VVS, however long it takes, I’d like to see 450 overs and one team come out on top,” Bond said.
In the circle of predictions amid the halted play, Indian coach turned commentator Sanjay Bangar acceded to Laxman and Bond’s suggestions. In fact, accounting for the notorious nature of the track, Banger furthered that if India manage to give a target of 160, it’s going to be difficult for the Kiwis to chase down on this wicket.
Curently, as the game is halted, New Zealand stand on its Day 3 score- 101/2 and trail by 116 runs.
