AT&S to invest $2 bn to build semiconductor plant in Malaysia

AT&S Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG, a semiconductor manufacturer, has announced its plan to invest $2 billion to construct a production plant in Malaysia in Kulim Hi-Tech Park of Kedah. It is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2021 and commence commercial operations from 2024. The plant will be constructed in Kulim Hi-Tech Park in the northern state of Kedah.

This will be the company’s first Southeast Asian plant according to Malaysia's International Trade and Industry Ministry.

Andreas Gerstenmayer, CEO, AT&S mentioned that R&D activities will also be executed at Malaysian plant apart from manufacturing high-tech products.

Muhyiddin Yassin, Prime Minister, Malaysia added that AT&S' footprint will boost the development of the semiconductor ecosystem in the country, give opportunities for local vendors dealing with advanced electronics and increase high-tech employment for the citizens.

AT&S is known for manufacturing high-end printed circuit boards and integrated circuit substrates which are used in mobile devices, industrial electronics, automotive applications and medical and health technology. The company has production facilities in Austria, India, China and South Korea.

According to the Malaysian government, the country has a mature electrical and electronics manufacturing sector that supplies to many companies including Apple Inc. The sector contributes 40% of the country’s total exports and around 7% of global semiconductor trade.
