Continental is expanding its market share in the tyre segment for fully electric vehicles and has

received tyre equipment approvals for more than 40 percent of the all-electric passenger car and

van models produced in Europe. The company has received approvals from eight of Europe’s 15

most popular electric cars and vans besides original equipment approvals for 19 of the 47 electric

vehicles produced in Europe. Other approvals consist of tyres for Volkswagen, Peugeot,

Mercedes-Benz and many more.

In the van segment, the range of electric vehicles is increasing. Continental tyres are fitted to more than a third of all fully electric campers and vans produced in Europe, with a total of nine different tire models, summer and all-season tyres.

Low rolling resistance is in particular demand for electric cars that focus on efficient driving. Many manufacturers rely on the EcoContact 6, in which Continental uses the Green Chili 2.0 rubber compound. The special compound of natural rubber and other components exhibits improved behavior during mechanical deformation and results in lower rolling resistance and therefore lower energy consumption. When developing the EcoContact 6, Continental was able to reduce rolling resistance by 15 percent compared with its predecessor.

According to Andreas Schlenke, tyre developer, Continental, there is not just one tyre for all fully electric vehicles. The company is working on developing the existing portfolio so that they meet the requirements of all electric vehicles and, at the same time, sustainably reduce emissions from combustion vehicles. He added that, almost their entire range of tyres is optimized for all drive types and the majority of the products can be found on electric vehicles.

Continental was founded in 1871 and offers safe, efficient, intelligent and affordable solutions for vehicles, machines, traffic and transportation. The portfolio of the tyre business unit includes services for the tire trade and fleet applications, as well as digital management systems for tyres.
