CHENNAI:
Police have launched a search for a two member gang which broke open two
ATM kiosks at Taramani and Velachery and decamped with Rs 8.52 lakh. Police suspected the same gang might have been involved in the two
ATM kiosks burglary reported in Virugambakkam and Ramapuram, a few days ago.
Police said the incident came to light after a resident noticed the SBI ATM at the
Vijaya Nagar bus terminus at Velachery tampered with on Sunday. After the resident informed, a police team from the Velachery police station visited the ATM. The team alerted the bank officials who examined the ATM and confirmed that the cash was stolen.
Police received a similar complaint from Taramani. In that case also, the thieves atrgeted an SBI ATM kiosk and stolen cash using the same modus operandi.
The bank officials have confirmed that Rs 8.52 lakh was stolen from the two bank ATM kiosks. Police browsed
CCTV camera footage and found the thieves wearing helmets. The Taramani police and the Velachery police have registered two separate cases and further investigations are on. Police have shared the details with the state crime record bureau (
SCRB) to examine the modus operandi use in the burglaries. Police have also collected fingerprints from the ATM kiosks.
