QUOTES-Reactions to U.S. Supreme Court ruling on NCAA compensation limits
June 21 (Reuters) - Politicians and sports officials reacted to the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Monday in favor of student athletes who challenged the National Collegiate Athletic Association's bid to maintain limits on education-related compensation:
DEMOCRATIC CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM:
"The NCAA's bankrupt model is finally starting to come apart. Sickening that colleges reap BILLIONS from student athletes but block them from earning a single dollar. This brings us one step closer to fixing that."
NCAA PRESIDENT MARK EMMERT:
"Even though the decision does not directly address name, image and likeness (NIL), the NCAA remains committed to supporting NIL benefits for student-athletes.
"Additionally, we remain committed to working with Congress to chart a path forward, which is a point the Supreme Court expressly stated in its ruling."
U.S. DEMOCRATIC SENATOR CHRIS MURPHY:
"Today's Supreme Court ruling highlights just how much the tide is turning against the NCAA and its unfair treatment of college athletes. The status quo on 'amateurism' is finally changing and the NCAA no longer has carte blanche to control athletes' livelihoods and monopolize the market. This is the kind of justice, and basic rights, college athletes deserve."
SARAH HIRSHLAND, U.S. OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE CEO:
"A large percentage of the U.S. Olympians are developed through the collegiate system so they view the decision as something positive for student athletes especially with some schools slashing the budgets and even eliminating sports programs.
"The collegiate environment is critically important to us and a very important partnership. We are also working hard to advance the opportunities for athletes from an earnings potential perspective and I think there is great opportunity to continue to work with collegiate institutions and our own national governing bodies and our own environment to advance athlete earning potential. I haven't read the decision from this morning so I cannot comment specifically."
