A well-known Eastern Cape jockey appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate's Court on Monday for the alleged sexual assault and rape of a 16-year-old.

The 40-year-old man, from Gqeberha's Fairview suburb, was arrested on Friday by the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the case was opened with the police on Thursday morning.

Naidu said it is alleged the victim was sexually assaulted and raped on numerous occasions.

The name of the jockey is known to News24, but cannot be released due to the nature of the crime and to protect the identity of the young victim.

The case has been postponed to 22 June for a formal bail application.
