WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden is bringing back presidential portrait unveilings.

Biden will host a White House ceremony to unveil former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama's official portraits later this year, according to an NBC News report.

The Obamas' portraits are “virtually done,” a person familiar with the process told NBC News.

Former President Donald Trump famously did not participate in a White House unveiling of Obama's portrait while in office. He is not expected to participate in a White House ceremony with Biden, either.

Trump is working on his official portrait, though, according to NBC News.

Barack Obama's office could not confirm the potential event to USA TODAY.

White House portrait unveiling tradition

It has been a decades-long tradition for first-term presidents to host their predecessor as a show of camaraderie in Washington.

When Obama was in office, he hosted former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush for their official portrait unveiling at the White House.

Bush hosted former President Bill Clinton and former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for their official portraits.

While in office Trump replaced the portraits of Clinton and Bush with portraits of former Republican Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William McKinley. However, in March, Biden put the portraits of Clinton and Bush back in prominent display in the White House.
