Former Orlando Pirates skipper Benson Mhlongo has urged the Soweto giants to consider appointing Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Steve Komphela if they decide to part ways with Josef Zinnbauer.

Zinnbauer's future at Pirates has been called into doubt after the club finished the recently concluded Premiership campaign in third place, 17 points shy of league champions Sundowns and three points ahead of fourth-placed Golden Arrows.

And, with a section of the Bucs faithful calling for a change in head coach in the off-season, Mhlongo has shared his thoughts on who could replace Zinnabauer.

"Look, he's got experience; been around the block; he understands our culture; he's a born leader; he's run his race; I think he can be given a chance," Mhlongo told KickOff.

"What happened at Chiefs, that is to his advantage because he has been there, he understands the pressure, he played for a big team, he was a captain, he did well in Turkey.

"So, I think we underrate him. I think it's time we appreciate what people have achieved. I think he has achieved a lot in his career. I don't see a problem there if you look at the players he has produced."

Pirates have also on Friday announced Mandla Ncikazi's arrival at the club on a 3-year deal that will see him join Zinnbauer's technical team.

Ncikazi worked under Komphela at Arrows before Mamelodi Sundowns lured him to Chloorkop.
