Bangladesh reports highest single day COVID 19 death toll since May 2

The COVID 19 situation in Bangladesh continues to be grim with 67 deaths being reported in a single day on Saturday.

This is the highest number of deaths in a single day since May 2 when 69 deaths were reported in the country.

The COVID 19 death toll in Bangladesh has gone up to 13,416.

The sample positivity rate on Saturday was reported to be 18.02 percent which is a decline from 18.59 percent recorded on Friday.

However, the over 18 percent level of sample positivity rate is the highest since April 18-19 when it was close to 19 percent.

The number of new cases showed a decline on Saturday.

According to the Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS), 3057 new Corona Positive cases were reported on Saturday which marked a decline from the level of 3883 cases detected on Friday, though the number of testing also declined from 20882 on Friday to 16,964 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh restarted the first dose of vaccination among selected groups with the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine after the first dose vaccination process was halted on April 26 due to disruption in the supply of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India.

China has gifted a total of 1.1 million doses of the vaccine to Bangladesh in two tranches in June.

Bangladesh has also received 1 lakh doses of the Pfizer COVID 19 vaccine on June 1.

Earlier, Bangladesh had received over 10.3 million doses of Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine from India which included 3.3 million doses as gift and the remaining 7 million doses as part of a commercial deal.
