Bengaluru
Continental, the
Germany-based global auto component major, has come up with a new initiative to
support and empower women in India to give them career opportunities in
manufacturing via various skills development programs. “Women for
Manufacturing,” is a program under which this initiative has been started. It
will broaden the scope of the women workforce in the manufacturing sector. This
field is stereotyped and considered unsuitable for women. Factors like limited
access to skill development programs and breadth of manufacturing across
different industries have led to misconceptions and underrepresentation. With the help of this program, women will get
inspired to understand the industry better and consider it as a career option.
According to
Rainer Hetzer, Head of Human Relations Autonomous Mobility and Safety, and HR
sponsor for Continental India, the company wants to ensure gender parity at the
workplace. Topics like leadership development programs, equal pay, learning
initiatives, sensitizing programs, and monitoring are considered important in
the company. He added that with this program the company wishes to create a
sustainable ecosystem where skilled women workforce can get more opportunities
for growth.
As per Prashanth
Doreswamy, Head, Continental India, manufacturing is a high growth
sector in India and the right resource pool should be created who have ambitious
intent. With the program, the company wants to touch the untapped women talent
and offer them a more gender-balanced manufacturing society. He added by saying
that as the company completes 150 years in the industry, it has launched this
program to extend its support towards social welfare.
Centum
Foundation is the Continental’s NGO partner for this program who will build a
sustainable model of skill development, guidance, empowerment, and support so
that even women talent can be a part of the manufacturing sector. The two
partners plan to roll out skills programs and coursework. ‘The STEP Ahead’ will
accelerate growth for women in Engineering, Science, Production, and
Technology. Year 1 of the program will focus on unemployed women, ITI students,
and high school girls from underprivileged society.
