Delhi Police Crime Branch on Sunday arrested 7 persons, including 2 doctors, for manufacturing and selling fake Liposomal Amphotericin-B injections, used in the treatment of Black Fungus.
3,293 vials of fake injections have also been recovered from the house of one of the doctors, Dr Altamas Hussain, in southeast Delhi's Nizamuddin area.
Delhi Police Commissioner S. N. Shrivastava took to Twitter and wrote: "Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested 7 persons including 2 doctors for manufacturing and selling fake Black Fungus Liposomal Amphotericin-B injections and recovered." "3293 vials of fake ‘Injections’ etc from residence of Dr. Altamas Hussain in Nizamuddin," he added.
For the uninitiated, Amphotericin-B is used in the treatment of Mucormycosis, also known as Black Fungus. It is a post-COVID infection and is usually seen in patients with diabetes, etc. According to a recent report, Mucormycosis cases have increased by over 150 per cent over the last few weeks in the country. On June 16, active cases of Mucormycosis in India were 27,142.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers on Friday said India has more than sufficient stock of Liposomal Amphotericin B drug for the treatment of Mucormycosis.
Minister of State Mansukh Mandaviya said: "Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers has allocated a total 7,28,045 vials of Liposomal Amphotericin B to all the states and Central institutions till June 17, 2021."
