Kevadia, Gujarat
The Statue of
Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat, is set to become India’s first electric
vehicles-only zone. The move comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi
announced that Kevadia will become India’s first EV city.
The Statue of
Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority (SOUADTGA) issued a
statement that said that they will be transforming the area around the world’s
tallest statue into a zone free from vehicular pollution in a phased manner.
As per the PM’s
plan, Kevadia will have only battery-based buses, two- and four-wheelers plying
in the city. Additionally, residents will get assistance and subsidies to buy electric three-wheelers and other EVs.
Initially, 50
e-rickshaws will be allowed with women drivers getting preference. They will be
given free training at the Skill Development Centre. A separate workshop and
charging station will also be set up around the 182-feet tall statue. A smart
mobile app will be developed to list the fares for electric vehicles.
The city of
Kevadia is right now the first place in the country to host an EV tourism
initiative. The place has eBikes with Rs 1500 as a fare for two hours. There
are two hydroelectric power plants, which generate abundant environment-friendly
electricity.
