Cubs eager for RHP Adbert Alzolay's return from IL
The Chicago Cubs hope for a boost on Monday when they plan to activate right-hander Adbert Alzolay from the injured list.
Alzolay, 26, was sidelined with a blister on the middle finger of his right hand.
He said Saturday that he felt ready to continue his strong 2021 season when he starts Monday's game against the Cleveland Indians.
"Oh, heck yeah," Alzolay told reporters.
Alzolay (4-5, 4.06 ERA) allowed four runs and walked five in three innings during his last start against the San Diego Padres on June 7.
His prior 10 starts brought a 3.62 ERA and an even more impressive 0.91 WHIP. Cubs manager David Ross is eager to see that kind of production return.
"It's a big piece we've been missing," Ross said Saturday. "He's been one of the guys that has really given us consistent starting pitching with real swing and miss. He's been a real asset to our rotation this year."
Alzolay is optimistic, and has felt that way for a few days.
"The intensity in the bullpen was really high so I'm happy with it," Alzolay said after a bullpen session on Thursday. "I threw all my pitches and the blister has been taken care of with the trainers and everything. I feel ready to go."
