Mumbai: The officials of crime branch unit 7 have arrested a 21-year-old man from the eastern suburbs near Navghar on Friday and seized illegal weapons, including 10 country made pistols, two extra magazines and six live rounds, from him. The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act.

Police said that they had received a tip-off from their sources that a man was to arrive with a weapons consignment in Mulund, following which a team led by officials of crime branch unit 7 laid a trap and kept a close vigil on the suspect. After they saw that the suspect was waiting for two men and was exchanging a bag, they nabbed him.

The accused, identified as Lakhan Singh Chauhan, has a number of cases registered against him and his name cropped up in illegal arms seizure last year. During investigation, it has been revealed that Chauhan, a resident of Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh, is associated with illegal weapon making business.

The police have procured a list of customers from Chauhan, whom he used to sell pistols. He told during interrogation that he used to sell a pistol for Rs 30,000, which is cheaper and better quality than other pistols. –Staff Reporter

Police suspect that he has been operating in states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The accused allegedly transported weapons in public vehicles, especially the bus, because the luggage is not checked so often. Police said further probe is underway.
