Southampton: India opener Shubman Gill copped a nasty blow early on in his innings off a Kyle Jamieson snorter during the World Test Championship final at Southampton on Saturday. It was the 17th over of the Indian innings when Jamieson decided to go for the short-pitch stuff as Gill was advancing to him looking to nullify the movement. The ball came back in sharply from a length and hit Gill on the helmet.

The Indian opener instantly took off his helmet and got immediate medical attention.

Here is the video of what actually happened:

Meanwhile, Gill has done well to see off the first hour on Day 2 after Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl. Gill and his opening partner Rohit Sharma got India off to a steady start as they ensured they do not lose early wickets. The duo stitched a 62-run stand before Rohit perished off a Jamieson delivery. Rohit was dismissed for 34 off 68 balls. His knock was laced with six boundaries.

At the fall of Rohit, Cheteshwar Pujara has walked into the middle. Pujara and Gill would now have to ensure they do not lose another wicket and squander the good start.

Virat Kohli said at the toss, “We would’ve probably bowled first as well. But runs on the board has been our strength. In a big final, runs on the board, however many, are an advantage. As you saw the makeup of our side, the balance is such that we prepare for any conditions. We’ve been performing really well in Test cricket. For us this is just a Test match we have to be professional in, have to follow our processes”.
