BHOPAL: A tiger cub of less than one year was knocked down by a vehicle on National Highway 43 at Shahdol Umaria border, in the wee hours on Friday. The cub died on the spot.

Team of forest officials reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. The accident was lethal and the cub had lost a lot of blood that caused his death, opined the forest team.

The tiger was crossing the national highway in Gunghuti range of Umaria forest division. The incident occurred on NH-43, around 35 kms away from Umaria district headquarters, said Divisional Forest Officer Umaria, Mohit Sood.

Sood said that it seems that some light vehicle hit the big cat around 3 am. The body parts of the tiger were intact. The post-mortem of the tiger is being carried out, he said, adding that the feline was not from the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. It was not from a protected forest area, the DFO said.

After the incident, now DFO plans to put up signboards on the highway cautioning drivers about forest area and movements of animals in the region. The DFO said that he will also write to the National Highway Authority of India to construct speed breakers in the sensitive forest area.
