Itanagar, Jun 19 (UNI) Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra on Saturday expressed grief over the demise of Indian sprint legend Milkha Singh, also known as 'Flying Sikh', and said the nation has lost one of its brightest sports stars.
In his message, the Governor said, "Deeply saddened by the passing away of Indian legendary sprinter Milkha Singh. Flying Sikh was one of the most inspiring sportspersons of India.
The finest athlete and a sporting legend, Singh inspired many generations of sportspersons, especially in individual athletic events and brought laurels for the nation and made every Indian proud."
He recalled an international athletic event of 1962 in Rajasthan's Jodhpur in which Singh had participated in a sprint event and won it with a big lead.
"I join the people of Arunachal Pradesh in paying our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and eternal peace of the departed soul," the Governor said.
Condoling his demise, Chief Minister Pema Khandu in a tweet wrote, " Heartfelt tribute to Padma Shri Captain Milkha Singh who left us all for heavenly abode yesterday. My deepest condolences. Three-time Olympian and a Commonwealth gold medalist, the legendary Flying Sikh’s legacy would continue to inspire generations of youths to come."
Singh passed away on Friday night due to post-Covid complications in Chandigarh. He was 91.
