MUMBAI:
Maharashtra water resources minister
Jayant Patil attended a high-level meeting with
Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa in Bengaluru for better flood-management between the two states.
After the meeting, Patil said the Karnataka government has decided to set up a real-time data acquisition system (RTDAS) at its Almatti and Narayanpur dams to monitor the water level, which will help prevent 2019 like floods in Kolhapur and Sangli districts in which 60 people lost their lives.
After the floods, it was alleged that the Karnataka government did not release water from its Almatti dam on the Krishna river which led to the flooding.
Krishna river originates in Satara district and flows through Sangli and Kolhapur before entering Karnataka.
Maharashtra already installed a RTDAS system in Krishna river basin, which helps monitor the pace of water level to rains.
"This system will help them decide when to release the water to avoid floods," said Patil.
In case Maharashtra has to release water from its dams as a precautionary measure, it will inform the Karnataka officials who would accordingly lower their water level in Almatti and Narayanpur dams.
