Croatia 1-1 Czech Republic: Patrik Schick penalty puts Czechs on verge of last 16

The Czech Republic took a huge step towards qualifying for the last 16 at Euro 2020 with an entertaining draw against Croatia at Hampden Park.

The Czechs opened the scoring through a controversial first-half Patrik Schick penalty, after referee Carlos del Cerro Grande checked the pitchside monitor and awarded the spot-kick for a Dejan Lovren foul on striker Schick.

Lovren, who missed Croatia's opening-game defeat by England with a knee ligament injury, caught Schick's nose with his elbow when the pair jumped to contest a corner.

Bayer Leverkusen forward Schick sent goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic the wrong way, finding the bottom left corner to become the first player to score three times in their first two European Championship appearances since Mario Mandzukic in 2012.

Croatia looked for an immediate response, but Ante Rebic blasted an effort high and wide from 10 yards out.

But Zlatko Dalic's side sprung into life in the second half, with Ivan Perisic equalising two minutes after the restart with a fine individual effort.

A quickly taken Andrej Kramaric free-kick released Perisic down the left wing, before he burst into the box, cut inside Vladimir Coufal and fired past Tomas Vaclik.

Inter Milan winger Perisic is the first Croatian to score in four separate major international tournaments, with goals in the 2014 World Cup, Euro 2016, the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

Playing each other for only the second time at a major tournament after a 2-2 draw in the group stages of Euro 2016, the game was an end-to-end encounter that lacked quality chances, with just three shots on target throughout.

It is the first time since the 2006 World Cup that Croatia have failed to win both of their opening two games of a major international tournament.

The Czech Republic have never beaten Croatia in four attempts, but the result leaves Jaroslav Silhavy's side top of Group D on four points, ahead of England on goal difference. Croatia sit third on one point, with Scotland below them on goal difference.

Croatia meet Scotland and the Czech Republic face England in the final round of Group D games, with both matches taking place on Tuesday at 20:00.

    Schick man of the match? I'd have given it to Perisic, a wholehearted player, underrated, never gives up. Pleased for him he won the CL with Bayern. I thought Modric was very poor. Spent most of the game hitting/lobbing in hopeful crosses.

      at 7.4? that's a low score for a motm. But that shows the lack of quality out there. Typically outstanding motm's get high 8's maybe early 9's.

      I think after getting that elbow to the face and scoring the goal and then being a good soldier and enduring upto when he was replaced, that contributed to the picture.

    Czech Rep won’t have any problem beating England. Sterling useless, Kane looked not interested, all in all shocking performance. Best player was Pickford.

    Very harsh penalty I felt! Also seemed like a lot of play acting going on during the game and who better to discuss it at half time than the person that introduced major league diving to the English leagues! Jurgen Klinsmann! And football has never looked back!!

      That penalty decision was asinine. How do you expect a defender to jump for the ball and win an aerial challenge if they cannot use their arms? It was done within reason and just an unfortunate accident. Very harsh penalty

    This Croatia team look so lethargic. You wouldn't think watching them that they were runners up in the World Cup 3 years ago. Really missing Rakitic and Mandzukic by the looks of things.

    Interesting that Croatia conceded an absurdly harsh penalty, then the minimum of 3 minutes added time ended on 2 minutes and 40 seconds, with Croatia in good possession. A more cynical man than me might have an opinion on that.

    Both England and Scotland players must be looking back on their respective opening fixtures against these 2 awful sides and realising their own performances must have been pretty dreadful !
    This match was thoroughly dull from start to finish..... and has already ensured it goes down as the worst game of the tournament !!!
