Heavy rainfall threw life out of gear in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Friday and halted traffic movement on several highways. The Badrinath national highway is blocked by rubble at two places between Pipalkoti and the Himalayan temple, while the Gwaldam national highway is blocked between Tharali and Karnaprayag following heavy downpour, the District Disaster Management Centre said. Downpour wreaks havoc on Bengal

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed concern over the heavy rainfall in various parts of the state, fearing it may give rise to a flood. While Kolkata witnessed around 170mm of rain on Wednesday night, there was also rainfall in neighbouring Jharkhand which could lead to water being released from dams. The CM also flagged the increasing number of lightning deaths and asked all to take precautions and not venture out during storms.

An overnight deluge, caused by a cyclonic circulation, left Kolkata drenched and waterlogged on Thursday morning even as the Met office predicted another heavy spell of rain within the next 48 hours. Warning that the wet spell could continue till Saturday, weathermen said the city might receive 70 mm of rainfall between Friday and Saturday. A brief respite from showers has been predicted on Sunday but the rain may resume on Monday. While the city received 144mm of rain in 24 hours till 8.30am on Thursday, the figure was 5.8mm in the next seven hours making it the second wettest June day in Kolkata in six years. The last time Kolkata had received such a pounding in June was in 2018, when it had rained162mm, soon after the onset of monsoon on June 26.

Those, who managed to reach office either by car-pooling or connecting auto rickshaws on Wednesday, logged in from home on Thursday.
