  • The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg found two brothers guilty of murdering a man in Alexandra in 2019.
  • The murder happened after one of the brothers got into a fight with another man.
  • The judge found that the evidence against the brothers was overwhelming.

Two brothers have been sentenced to a collective 44 years' imprisonment for murdering a man in Alexandra, Johannesburg, in November 2019.

Advocate Enock Makua argued in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg that brothers Joseph and Wiseman Dladla acted in furtherance of a common purpose when Joseph shot and killed Khumbulani Cyprian Luthuli.

"The two sought to avenge the loss of a fight by Wiseman and went on to arm themselves, which I respectfully submit proved the motive to kill," Makua said.

Wiseman had gotten into a fight with another man Sandile Bhengu, and the brothers had gone looking for Bhengu the following day when they came across Luthuli and two others.

"They demanded to know where Bhengu was from the three men. When they refused to assist, Joseph pulled out a gun and fired several shots in the direction of the three, wounding Luthuli and the other two. The other two managed to flee in different directions and survived," National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said.

Mjonondwane added that Luthuli succumbed to the gunshot wounds soon after he was admitted to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

The brothers were also found guilty of two counts of attempted murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

During sentencing, Judge Ramarumo Monama said the evidence against the brothers was overwhelming, and they showed no remorse even after being convicted.
