How to activate Google chat on smartphones
Google recently integrated two of the popular features of its enterprise apps suite Workspace to its standard Gmail app. These include Google Chat and Rooms. Google chat is meant for communication with friends, family and colleagues. It’s different from Rooms as it can be done between two people, while Rooms allows one to chat with multiple people at the same time. Both the features are now available on Gmail’s mobile app.

Here’s how you can enable Google Chat on your mobile devices and in browser:

  • Open Gmail.
  • Tap on the three-line icon on the top-left corner. Scroll down and select “Settings.”
  • Select your account
  • Select General
  • If you are using Android then, check off “Show the Chat and Rooms tabs.” If you are using an iOS device, toggle “Show the chat and room tab” on

To begin a chat:

Click on the chat icon and press on “New chat”, then type in the name of a person or create a room or browse existing rooms.
