MANGALURU: After more than a month,
Dakshina Kannada district recorded more than 1,000 daily cases of
Covid-19 on Friday. The district reported 1,006 fresh cases and recorded 15 fatalities, which is the highest daily Covid-19 death toll of the year.
The district had reported 1,787 cases of Covid-19 on May 15. Later, the average daily cases were reduced from 1,000 in May to 600 in June. However, the spike in deaths continued in the district. While the district reported 156 Covid-19 fatalities in May, 111 deaths were reported as on Friday, with more than 50 deaths in the last five days. The district has so far reported 1,024 deaths related to Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the
positivity rate of the district increased from 7.2% on Thursday to 10.1% on Friday, and the number of active cases increased from 6,605 to 6,931.
DHO Dr Kishore Kumar M told TOI that the death audit committee of the district has been holding meetings at least twice a week. “Late referral of cases to hospitals is one of the reasons for the increase in fatalities. Another reason is the comorbidities in infected patients. When patients from other districts test positive for Covid-19 here, after getting admitted for treatment of non-Covid ailments in Dakshina Kannada, we include such cases in the district’s tally. Similarly, the deaths of such cases are also added to the Dakshina Kannada district’s tally,” the DHO said.
Dakshina Kannada district also reported two more mucormycosis cases on Friday.
