Class 12 board exams should have been scrapped much before SC's intervention: Sisodia

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday said the Centre should have taken the decision to cancel the Class 12 board exams much before. They should not have waited for the Supreme Court's intervention. He said he is is glad that his suggestion of evaluating the Class 12 students on the basis of their marks for Classes 10, 11 and the pre-boards exams has been taken into account. "The decision to cancel the board exams was a welcome one, keeping in mind the safety and security of our 1.5 crore Class 12 students. The evaluation criteria which we had suggested, looking at the student performance in classes 10, 11, 12, has been taken into account," Sisodia said in a statement.

Students rejoice the new evaluation policy with few concerns

'I am pretty happy with the criteria because it works quite well for me, but I don't think it makes much sense. Our subjects in 11th and 12th are different from 10th, so it's kind of weird to be taking class 10 marks in 12th. But I'm happy they aren't only taking 12th pre boards because those were really hard and we did not do too well in those. I did pretty well in 11th, but I know a lot of my friends did not do well at all. But the thing is, most of the people I know have already gotten into colleges or are relying on entrance exams, so it doesn't matter too much anyway,' said Ragini Ramanujam, 18-year-old Class 12 student, Brigade School, JP Nagar, Bangalore.

Previous performance of schools to help in standardisation of result: CBSE

“As marks of class 11 and class 12 component will be awarded at school level, they will strictly not be comparable across schools due to the variations in the quality of question papers, the evaluation standard and processes, the mode of conduct of exams etc. Therefore, to ensure standardisation, each school will have to internally moderate the marks to account for the school level variations by using a reliable reference standard,” Sanyam Bhardwaj, controller of examinations, CBSE, told The Indian Express.

Including Class 11 marks can hamper result: Students

'I believe that considering the performance of class 10 and 12 is fair but taking 30 per cent of final exams of class 11 is not as it often not considered as the most serious academic year in comparison to class and 12 and might effect on the overall result,' Anant Jain, Class 12 student of Vivekanand School, D-Block, Anand Vihar, Delhi, told indianexpress.com.

CBSE was tasked by the Supreme Court to devise an alternative assessment scheme in two weeks. The 12-member committee had its last meeting on Saturday, and CBSE will, in all likelihood, submit its plan to the Supreme Court on Monday. Government sources said committee members favoured using the Class 10 Board marks during Saturday’s discussion since that would be an objective reflection of a student’s performance.
