MUMBAI: The Mumbai Police on Thursday claimed to have solved the case of theft at a jewellery shop within six hours of case being filed by arresting an employee of the shop who was hired just five days ago.
Hiralal Kumawat (26) was arrested from Kasa Khurd, a village in the Palghar district of Maharashtra.
Hiralal was trying to flee to Rajasthan in a cab that he had hired in advance before he executed the theft of ornaments worth Rs 30.42 lakh at Riya Gold Jewellery Shop in Powai on Wednesday.
Interestingly, Hiralal committed the theft hardly a month after he was released on bail on May 20 in a case of theft.
“The jeweller, Ashok Mandot, appointed Hiralal based on a reference he had received from Rajasthan.
Mandot was unaware of Hiralal’s criminal record.
Hiralal was caught with the help of technical surveillance,” said a police officer.
Hiralal committed the theft between 2pm and 2.30pm when his employer had gone home for lunch.
Ashok learnt about the theft when he returned and found Hiralal missing.
Ashok found that the shelf glass of his shop was broken and 676g gold ornaments were missing.
Based on Ashok's complaint, deputy commissioner of police Maheshwar Reddy formed a team which scanned CCTV footages from Powai locality and identified a Haryana-registered cab in which Kumawat was travelling with the bag containing stolen ornaments.
