Uttar Pradesh: Clash with mob in Magarwara area of Unnao leaves 18 cops injured

KANPUR: A day after a car allegedly mowed down two motorcyclists to death, their family members and locals clashed with police on Wednesday as the latter tried to stop them from blocking Kanpur-Shuklaganj road near Akrampur in Magarwara area of Unnao. They were protesting with the bodies of the deceased persons against alleged police inaction and delay in releasing compensation to the kin of the deceased. At least 18 policemen were injured in the clash.
According to reports. Rajesh and Vipin, residents of Devi Kheda, were killed in the accident after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a speeding car on Tuesday near Akrampur village on Kanpur-Shuklaganj highway.
Irked over the incident, the victims' family members and locals staged a road blockade on Tuesday.
The protest was called off after the police and the district officials intervened in the matter and assured to take action against the car driver and recommend suitable financial assistance to the kin of the deceased.
After the post-mortem examination of the deceased, their family members and locals, alleging inaction on the part of the police and the district administration, again staged a road blockade with the dead bodies, bringing the Kanpur-Shuklaganj road near Devi Kheda in Magarwara area to a standstill.
They raised slogans and demanded immediate arrest of the accused car driver and compensation to kin of the deceased.
Later, as the police tried to lift the blockade, a clash ensued. While the mob hurled bricks and stones, the police, in retaliation, resorted to cane-charge. A huge contingent of police and PAC personnel, led by ASP Unnao Shashi Shekhar Singh, patrolled the area to bring the situation under control. Chaos prevailed in the area for nearly three hours.
"Investigations are on. We have arrested a few persons involved in the violence. As many as 18 policemen have suffered injuries. The situation is now under control. The road blockade has been successfully lifted." the ASP said.
