A PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Centre and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to examine WHO recommendations on fat, salt and sugar intake and frame guidelines to ensure that “Health Star Rating” and “Health Warning” is printed on front of packaging.

Petitioner advocate Ashwini kumar Upadhyay said it was a question of right to life and demanded that “Health Impact Assessment” and “Environment Impact Assessment” should be mandatory for all industries producing packaged food items and beverages.

He pointed out that FSSAI neither conducts health impact assessment nor implements health star rating.
