Woman Claims 10-month-old son Bought 'Non-Refundable' $10K Tesla Upgrade Package

A mom on TikTok has gone viral for making the claim that her 10-month-old son accidentally purchased a $10,000 self-driving package for her car through the Tesla app. According to the post, the TikToker didn't realize the purchase had been made until it appeared on her bank statement. The video has received almost two million views, and hundreds of commenters are in disbelief.

The TikTok opens with a picture of the order confirmation page that explains the order details and instructions for how to set up the service. The captions on the screen read: "When your 10-month-old purchases the full self-driving package through the Tesla app." The video is set to the popular TikTok remix of "Oh No" by the Commodores.

The video continues with a picture of her son, followed by a video of the Tesla in self-drive mode with the captions: "And you didn't know until you checked the bank statement and you find out that this is NON-refundable 48 hours after purchase."

"Why isn't there a password or a security measure before you could make this purchase," the mother asks as she showed an in-app screenshot of the receipt.

Many commenters were quick to share that they weren't convinced with the mom's story.

Said one commenter: "Yeah, let's blame the baby," followed by a wink emoji.

"But imagine having 10k in [the] bank and not noticing that," said another.

"I have to say cap," said a user by the name of Stephen, "because 99 percent of banks need a double authentication or verify [sic] before it will let anything be purchased." The term "cap" is slang for "lie."

Others, however, took the opportunity to make jokes.

"They did say babies were expensive," commented a TikToker named Nicole. "Is this what they mean?!"

"He said he heard y'all weighing the pros and cons but at the end of the day HE is the decision-maker in this household," joked another.

The mother recorded a follow-up TikTok responding to another user who believes the story to be a lie because the bank would "always text you if an online purchase is over a certain amount, especially $10k."

In her response, recorded from the driver's seat of the Tesla, the mother says: "The way Tesla works is, when you purchase a car, you will have an account with Tesla. So when you need to take your care to the service center to get anything repaired, they will have it all on file in your account. So you have a card and bank account hooked up to your Tesla app. I mean, if you have a Tesla app you can go and see for yourself. But it's not a lie."

"Your bank said treat yo self, your son said treat yo self ... Tesla said no refunds," joked one commenter.

Whether the internet has faith in her story or not, she and her husband appear to be enjoying their upgrade.
