The Delhi Police on Thursday has received a complaint against Twitter MD Manish Maheshwari, actor Swara Bhasker and The Wire senior journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani for tweeting Ghaziabad elderly man’s assault video on their social media handles.
The complaint has been filed on Wednesday by an advocate named Amit Acharya at Delhi’s Tilak Marg police station. The complaint has asked the Delhi police to file an FIR against Bhasker, Twitter India MD and Sherwani and book them under IPC sections 153 (provocation for rioting), 295A (acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) 505 (mischief) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).
According to the police, the complainant has asked the police to take action against Sherwani, Bhasker and others who are trying to spread hate in society by circulating such type of videos.
Earlier, an FIR has been filed against Congress leaders Shama Mohamed, Salman Nizami, Maskoor Usmani, writer Saba Naqvi, journalists Rana Ayyub and Mohammed Zubair, in the same case.
FIR said these people did not check the truth behind the video shared it on social media platforms by giving it a communal angle just to spread hate and unrest in the society.
The video clip, which has been circulating on the social media in which a elderly Muslim man named Abdul Shamad Saifi, can be seen was thrashed by some young men, where they have asked the elderly man to chant Jai Shri Ram and cut his long beard and hair.
However, the police has denied the communal angle and said the accused were unhappy about a tabeez (amulet) that being sold to him and it did not work. Ghaziabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police Iras Raja on Wednesday said three people Kalloo Gurjar, Parvesh Gurjar and Adil have been arrested for assaulting the elderly man and police are taking appropriate action in the matter.
