Covid-19: Tamil Nadu’s discharge rate nears 94%

CHENNAI: In the last 24 hours, 23,207 Covid-19 patients in Tamil Nadu got discharged after treatment, more than double the number of people infected during the period. A total of 11,805 people tested positive on Tuesday.
The state’s discharge rate is nearing 94% and there is a considerable fall in the number of active cases. There are currently 1,25,215 patients undergoing treatment in TN, 43% less than last week.

Drop in cases coupled with continuous health infra augmentation has made Covid bed availability better. Over 1.11 lakh beds are now vacant in hospitals and care centres in Tamil Nadu including 3,246 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 29,944 oxygen beds.
The Directorate of Medical Education has told deans of all government medical colleges in the state to keep at least100 beds ready in paediatric wards as experts have predicted that more children (below18) could be affected in case of a third wave. “Though doctors at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science), New Delhi have not confirmed such predictions, we are keeping all government facilities ready,” said health minister Ma Subramanian.
In Chennai, the number of new cases (793) dropped below 800-mark after 50 days. Coimbatore (1,563) and Erode (1,270) continued to record more fresh cases, but the infection curve is on the decline for the past two weeks. Similar trend was observed at Trichy (360) and Madurai (192)
Death data
A total of 267 people died of Covid in TN in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 30,068, the third highest in the country. The case-fatality ratio is still high at 1.3%.
In the case of mucormycosis, of the 1,736 infected so far in TN, 77 have died. Tamil Nadu requested 45,000 Amphotericin B vials from the Centre and got 11,796 doses. The state currently has 4,366 doses in reserve, said Subramanian.
Vaccination
After reporting 2 lakh-3 lakh vaccinations a day this week, it dropped to 68,046 on Tuesday and 1,06,65,464 have so far been vaccinated in TN.
