Renault Nissan management and workers' union opt for arbitration

The management of Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL) and its workers' union have opted for arbitration route to solve their issues. It is the first time that an industrial dispute in an MNC will be decided by arbitration under Section 10A of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947. Total 53 demands have been raised by both parties. The Tamil Nadu government has published the terms of reference for the arbitration on the dispute between Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL), a car production JV between Renault and Nissan Motor Company, and its workers’ union Renault Nissan India Thozhilalar Sangam (RNITS).

The arbitration is for settling wage revision and other similar aspects and the carmaker has created history by opting for this approach. This is the first time an industrial dispute in a multinational company is set to be decided by arbitration under Section 10A of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947 in Tamil Nadu.

The arbitrator has been finalised as retired Madras High Court Judge P. Jyothimani. The fee for the arbitrator will be Rs 0.15 million per sitting that will be paid by the company.

The arbitrator will hear the 53 demands raised both by RNITS (38 demands) and Renault Nissan Automotive India management (15 demands) and come to a final decision.
