Second lion succumbs to Covid-19 at Chennai Zoo in a month

Confirming the death of the 12-year-old Asiatic male lion, the AAZP Deputy Director said that the lion named Pathabanathan was kept in the safari area of ​​the park.

According to the report of the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, the infection of SARS-Cov-2 was found in the samples of this lion, the Deputy Director said in a statement. Since June 3, the lion was being treated intensively. Earlier on June 3, a 9-year-old lioness Neela died of Covid-19.

Blood samples, facial samples and nasal swabs of 11 lions were sent to the National Institute of High-Security Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh for the examination out of which 9 lions tested positive for Coronavirus.

The first traces of corona infection in lions and tigers were first found in Barcelona (Spain) and Bronx zoo in America.
