Vadodara/ Anand: A football-sized fibroid tumour weighing 2.5 kg has been removed from a 60-year-old woman’s uterus in Anand district.
Ramila Patel from Petlad was suffering from acute pain in the abdomen but had no idea that she was carrying such a huge tumour inside her body. After doctors of Changa-based Charusat hospital successfully operated upon her, Patel was discharged on Monday.
“The woman had post menopause bleeding. In such cases, we generally go for malignancy which in her case revealed the presence of such a large fibroid,” said Dr Janki Amin, gynaecologist at Charusat Hospital.
“Although it resembled the abdomen of a seven months pregnant woman, the patient did not fully realise her problem as she was obese. Although she was facing discomfort like urine problems, she had ignored it,” she said.
The patient was also borderline diabetic. “We removed the fibroid through hysterectomy (a surgical procedure to remove a uterus). The procedure was a challenge because of the sheer size of the tumour which was putting pressure on surrounding organs like urinary bladder,” she said.
The surgery was carried out free under state government’s Mukhyamantri Amrutum (MA) scheme.
