ULHASNAGAR: In a major setback for the ruling Shiv Sena in Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC), BJP candidate Deepak Sirwani alias Tony on Wednesday won the important standing committee chairman election unopposed after his rival candidate Kulwantsingh Sahota alias Bitu Bhai withdrew his nomination in absence of majority.
Earlier, the standing committee chairman belonged to the Shiv Sena.
In the election, the BJP received the much-needed support from the Republican Party of India, which was earlier associated with the Shiv Sena.
With this, Shiv Sena holds the mayor's post while RPI and BJP hold deputy mayor and standing committee chairman's posts respectively.
