McKeon tops Campbell in freestyle heats

Emma McKeon has swum the fastest women's 100m freestyle in the world this year at Australia's Olympic selection trials.

McKeon topped qualifying in Wednesday morning's heats in Adelaide, clocking 52.19 seconds.

McKeon's time eclipsed her 52.29 at the Sydney Open in May as the quickest time this year.

And McKeon was only 0.16s behind Cate Campbell's Commonwealth benchmark set in 2018.

Campbell (52.78) was the second-quickest into Wednesday night's final followed by Madison Wilson (58.06) and Meg Harris (53.23).

Bronte Campbell (53.35) was ranked fifth.

Meanwhile, Mitch Larkin led qualifying in the men's 200m individual medley.

The Commonwealth record holder in the event, Larkin has opted focus on the medley at the Olympics and drop backstroke from his program.

Larkin had been scheduled to swim a 200m backstroke heat on Wednesday morning but pulled out of that event.

"It was just a choice of not over complicating my day," Larkin said.

"I'm not going to be doing both at the Olympics.

"So today was just focus on executing what I need to and obviously shortening my time in the pool and making life a lot easier than it could have been doing both swims."

In Larkin's absence, Tristan Hollard was quickest through the 200m backstroke heats while Jenna Strauch set the qualifying pace in the women's 200m breaststroke.
