“The City University of New York applauds the U.S. Department of Education’s affirmation that the workplace protections extended to gay and transgender people by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County also safeguard students under Title IX, the 1972 law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools.
“Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona’s statement that ‘students cannot be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity’ resonates powerfully — and fittingly in the middle of Pride Month — across our diverse University. We are proud of our culture of inclusion and remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting and protecting our LGBTQI+ students, as well as our faculty and staff.
“This decision reverses the previous administration’s unjust position on this issue and is a crucial measure in America’s ongoing battle against gender discrimination.”
