Ujjain: A vigilance team of the power distribution company (Discom) from Indore which went to probe a complaint of power theft in Shikari Gali was attacked by the locals on Tuesday.

A member of the team was injured in the attack and on his complaint, the police have booked the attackers for obstruction of government work.

The vigilance team had received a complaint of massive power theft in Shikari Gali. It was found out that electricity in comparison to that power the consumption in the area the meter reading was not at par and it is causing loss to the company.

The team led by divisional engineer Subhash Khalko and junior engineer Tapan Sen came to Ujjain from Indore headquarters to find out the exact situation. For investigation, the team had also taken the local staff of electricity department of Nai Sadak Zone with them.

A team of about ten persons reached Shikari Gali and after checking more than thirty houses, when the team reached the house of a person named Akram. There the team members discovered that the meter is tampered and the main cable was cut. It was a sign of theft of electricity, said an official. When the team initiated the formalities to book the accused, the kin of Akram and locals raised a ruckus. Afterwards they started beating the members of the team.

The vigilance team stopped their and left the spot. One Sharukh, who was a part of the team reached Mahakal police station along with local officials and lodged a report of obstruction and assault against Faizan son of Rafiq and Akram.

People of Shikari Gali also reached the Mahakal police station and started pressurising them not to file a report. Assistant engineer Prashant Khatik of Nai Sadak electricity zone said that we have lodged a case against the miscreants who have attacked the vigilance team in Shikari Gali.

Theft rampant in dense settlements

The West Zone is troubled by the excessive theft of electricity in the dense settlements of the city. The houses in these areas are so close that it affects the checking work.
