Robert Marawa shares his coronavirus experience and warns South Africans not to take it lightly.

He's grateful to be alive. And he wants to share his experience to warn others that Covid-19 is still out there and it can be deadly.

It started with slight flu symptoms but took a turn for the worst when he developed Covid-19 pneumonia.

Broadcaster and sports personality Robert Marawa has opened up about his coronavirus experience and the importance of seeking help as soon as possible when the symptoms worsen.

In a statement Marawa shared on his social media pages, he detailed his ordeal with Covid-19. He is still recovering.

“It is with great gratitude that I still find myself alive and able to address this personal matter publicly. I was recently diagnosed positive with Covid-19 and started strict self-isolation, while not taking any medically prescribed pharmaceutical medication.

“What started out as the flu-like symptoms we’ve all been warned about, quickly led to fulminant debilitating inexplicable fatigue without shortness of breath on day 8 of my diagnosis.”

He was then advised by a doctor to get the electronic device that measures pulse and blood oxygen concentration. His oxygen concentration dropped to 92 and he was immediately rushed to the hospital. Where his chest x-ray showed extensive pneumonia, he was later transferred to the ICU for high care and was there for a week.

“The medical professionals working tirelessly to revive my health concluded that the extensive level of Covid-19 pneumonia I had developed could have resulted in a far worse experience had I not sought medical intervention as soon as I did.

"The Covid-19 pandemic is real and it is something that my family and I have been dealing with. I, along many South Africans have lost loved ones and dear colleagues to this virus and as I make my way to full recovery, I would like to warn anyone who still taking this global pandemic lightly. The coronavirus is vicious on the body, it is a tough battle and I encourage you to take care of yourself and your loved ones by following all the protocols put in place.”
