About a year after India and China faced off at Galwan valley, many Indians claim they have stopped buying Chinese products or have reduced the usage substantially, a LocalCircles survey said.

As per the survey, 43% of Indian consumers said they did not buy any made in China product in the last 12 months. While 34% said they bought 1-2 products, 8% bought 3-5 Chinese products, 4% of consumers who bought 5-10 made in China products, 3% said 10-15, 1% said over 20, and another 1% said 15-20 products. The remaining people who participated in the survey refused to disclose.

A similar survey conducted in November last year indicated that 71% of Indian consumers did not purchase Made in China products, and many of those who did ended up doing so because of their lower prices.

India-China trade in 2020 had declined by 5.6% to $ 87.6 billion. Trading between the two countries soared 70.1% from January to May 2021 to $ 48.16 billion. The surge was particularly due to the rise in import of life-saving medical equipment and medical oxygen equipment by India from China as COVID-19 cases surged in the country. About 18,000 people participated in the survey.

“India depends on China in many key industries from electrical machinery, appliances to pharmaceutical drugs. In reality, China’s share in Indian imports for intermediate goods is 12%, and capital goods are 30%, while final consumer goods are 26%,” the LocalCircles survey said.

The first question in the survey sought to understand how many products that were made in China Indian consumers purchased in the last 12 months. In response, 43% said they did not buy anything made in china. Breaking down the poll, 34% said 1-2 products, and 8% bought 3-5 of them. There were also 4% of consumers who bought 5-10 made in China products, 3% said 10-15, 1% said over 20, and another 1% said 15-20 products. 6% of Indian consumers did not have an opinion, the survey added.
