Zero Covid case in Dharavi, first time since second wave

Mumbai’s Dharavi on Monday has reported zero cases of coronavirus for the first time since the Covid-19 has begun in the country. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the Covid cases in the area started to decline at the end of April this year. The total caseload of infection in the slum-dominated area has reached 6,861.

According to the BMC’s data, the area was witnessing almost 50 to 60 daily Covid cases in March. BMC said, on March 23, the quarantine center at Vanita Samaj Hall with 250-bed was fully occupied, due to which the civic corporation had to start few more quarantine centers to admit Covid patients for Dharavi residents only.

Mumbai’s Dharavi is considered Asia’s largest slum, became a red zone after it had witnessed 99 Covid infections on 8 April. The infections in the area gradually declined, and it had reported only one case twice in the last week.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus caseload in Mumbai has seen 700 fresh Covid cases on Sunday, which reached 7,16,579 with 19 have scummed to the infection that pushed the death toll to 15,183.

The BMC said, 704 people were recovered from the infection and discharged from hospitals during the same day, which pushed the recovery count to 6,83,382.

BMC data said, a total of 30,137 tests have been done in the past 24 hours, taking the overall number of tests in Mumbai to 66,20,408.

Maharashtra is one of the states that is witnessing rising cases of black fungus or mucormycosis cases that reached 7,395 on Sunday, as per the state health department. Meanwhile, 644 people have died due to black fungus, while 2,212 have recovered from the disease.

The maximum black fungus cases were reported in Nagpur, Pune, Solapur and Nashik districts. The State government has declared black fungus as an epidemic that is spreading by each day.
