Weather turns pleasant in Kashmir, wet weather to continue

Srinagar, Jun 15 (UNI) After witnessing week-long heat wave, weather turned pleasant on Tuesday after maximum temperature witnessed several degree drop due to morning heavy showers, lightning and strong winds.

A Met department spokesman said this evening that there could be fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers in the Kashmir and Jammu divisions during the next 24 hours. However, there could be decrease in precipitation during the subsequent two days, he said.

After witnessing heat wave for about a week, including hottest day when maximum temperature surged to 34.7 degree last week, weather turned pleasant today after heavy showers and winds in the morning.

The mercury recorded three degree to five degree below normal maximum temperature in the valley, turning the weather very pleasant.

He said summer capital, Srinagar, recorded 23.6 degree maximum temperature, 4.8 notches below normal after receiving 2.5 mm rainfall since 0830 hrs to 1730 hrs. The minimum temperature, however, remained above normal, he said, adding it was 16.2 degree, 1.4 degree above normal.

He said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 26 degree and 15 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar.

The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded below normal maximum and minimum temperature after 1.4 mm rainfall during the day. The maximum temperature at ski resort was 14 degree, five notches below normal while the minimum temperature was 8.5 degree, 0.8 degree below normal. The tourist resort witness good number of guests daily.

Pahalgam, famed health resort which serves as base camp for annual pilgrimage to holy Amanath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas, recorded 20.3 degree maximum temperature, 3.8 notches below normal while the minimum temperature was 7.3 degree, 1.2 notches below normal after recording 7.3 mm rainfall till 1730 hrs this evening.

Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the maximum temperature was 24 degree, 3 notches below normal while the minimum temperature was 12.4 degree, 0.9 degree below normal.

He said Kokernag, a tourist resort in south Kashmir, recorded 23.1 degree maximum temperature which was three notches below normal while the minimum temperature was 12.3 degree, 0.8 degree below normal.

Kupwara in north Kashmir the maximum temperature today was 24.8 degree, 3.1 notches below normal while the minimum temperature was 12.5 degree, 0.7 degree below normal.
