Zerodha cofounder Nikhil Kamath on Monday apologised for causing “confusion” by using unfair means to win a game of chess against world champion and grandmaster Viswanathan Anand.

Kamath admitted to cheating soon after he was banned by Chess.com. He tweeted that he had help from “people analyzing the game, computers, and the graciousness of Anand sir himself to treat the game as a learning experience.”

The five-time chess world champion said in response to Kamath’s tweet, “I just played the position on the board and expected the same from everyone,” and that he upheld the ethics of the game during the match.

On Sunday, the nonprofit Akshaya Patra Foundation organised a Covid-19 relief fundraiser as part of which Bollywood celebrities including Aamir Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Kamath played against world champion Anand at one ago in a one-hour simul game. Kamath was the only person out of the given opponents who beat Anand in the game.

Chess.com, a social network for chess players, banned Kamath’s profile on account of violating “fair play rules”.

The cofounder of the online brokerage firm said it was “ridiculous” for people to accept that he beat Anand. “..that is almost like me waking up and winning a 100mt race with Usain Bolt,” he tweeted.

According to industry tracker, ChessBase India, Anand had asked Kamath to keep his name out of the apology on Twitter, which he ignored.

Zerodha did not respond to ET's query.

Kamath is one of the youngest billionaires in India and has often publicly spoken about his experiences of playing Chess which he likened to the stock market. Recently, the Kamath brothers made headlines after Zerodha approved a resolution to hike their annual salaries to Rs 100 crore.
