Bengaluru: The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), in partnership with Hitachi ABB Power Grids, will provide portable cold chain transport devices in select South Indian cities for efficient delivery of Covid-19 vaccines.

The device is indigenously developed, according to C-CAMP.

The organisation has come up with a portable battery-operated medical-grade refrigeration unit with pre-set temperatures and strict temperature control. Its thermoregulation properties have advanced algorithms that maintain a stable and uniform, WHO-prescribed temperature for Covid-19 vaccines.

Hitachi ABB Power Grids India has committed to fund the project with its corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds.

The patented technology will be deployed at state government health facilities in Bengaluru, Mysore and Chennai over the next six months. The cold chain system is likely to help the vaccine storage and delivery and arrest last mile vaccine spoilage because of thermal degradation in commonly used iceboxes.

“We cannot afford such a colossal wastage at a time when the country is facing a severe shortfall in vaccines,” said C-CAMP CEO Dr Taslimarif Saiyed. “Our partnership with Hitachi ABB Power Grids in India will help deploy an innovative new cold chain device to plug this enormous gap, ease logistics pressures and ensure 100% vaccine efficacy as we gear up to inoculate one billion-plus people.”

Hitachi ABB Power Grids’s India CEO N Venu assured to support innovations and assist remote healthcare centres to relieve the economic burden of wasted vaccines. “As a part of India Inc., we are putting our weight behind the country’s Covid-19 relief efforts,” he said.
