Magulong village observes World Environment Day

Imphal, June 13 2021: A prize distribution ceremony for essay competition organised in connection with the observance of World Environment Day was held at Everspring Park, Magulong village in Tamenglong district on Sunday.

The competition was organised by Everspring Park Project Committee, under the topic "How to protect and preserve the environment of Magulong".

The essay competition was held alongside tree plantation programme in and around the park, as part of the observance.

The competition was divided into senior category for classes 10 and above and junior category of classes 6 to 10, and participated by students from Zeme villages in Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.

In the senior category, Erangwang Newme (LLB, Assam University) from Old Mandeu, Tamenglong won the first prize while Mituarangle (BA/Hons Political Science, Delhi University) of Magulong bagged the second prize and Ngaudaile Pame (Class 12 in Eklavya School, Tamenglong) of Magulong secured the third prize.

In the junior category, Nga- lung James Disuang (Class 8, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Dimapur) was declared the winner followed by Ningdau Disuang (Class 8, Eklavya School Tamenglong) and Epeibuile Disuang (Class 8, Langmei Hr.

School Tamei) in second and third place respectively.

The trio belongs to Magulong village.

The prize distribution ceremony was attended by village authority leaders, church leaders and Everspring Park Project Committee.

During the prize distribution ceremony, social worker Stephen Disuang, who is also the former chairman of Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur, and one of the judges for the competition, urged the attendees to carefully consider the importance of reforestation as a means to combat the damage done by shifting cultivation.

More trees mean more water, hence planting trees is a must to maintain the regular supply of water for the village, he added.

Furthermore, he reminded the gathering on the danger of using plastics and non-biodegradable substances.

Magulong village, which is located in one of remotest parts of Tousem sub-division, launched its own nature conservation project called Everspring Park to regenerate and conserve water of the Everspring well for its perennially availability.

The villagers initiated the project in 2019 as people's project under the leadership of two village youths namely Haineube Newme and Josiah Disuang.

The project also aims at planting more trees, flowers and herbs for their key roles in maintaining ecological balance while keeping the surroundings fresh and beautiful.
