Charhajare curfew violation row resolved, another crops up at Sekmai

Kangpokpi, June 13 2021: Incidents of curfew violation by the public and abuse of power by the police in enforcing curfew has been cropping up in the state over the past few days.

While the recent accusation and allegation on curfew violation and police high-handedness at charhajare was resolved yesterday, a similar incident cropped up at Sekmai where a theologian alleged Sekmai police of harassment while enforcing the curfew.

In a joint meeting of Kangpokpi District CSOs and Charhajare yesterday at Charhajare Community Hall, the issue of curfew violation and the alleged high-handedness.

It may be recalled that one Pradeep Karki of Charhajare had alleged the Motbung Police Outpost commander of harassing and assaulting him on the ground of curfew violation on June 7 evening while the COVID Task Force Motbung area blamed Pradeep Karki of arrogance over the police personnel who were toiling hard day and night for the wellbeing of the public.

In connection with the incident, Kangpokpi SP had suspended the Post Commander of Motbung Police Outpost.

In the emergency joint meeting, Navin Gorkha Youth Club, Women Society Charhajare and All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union represented the victim's party while KSO Sadar Hills, TYA Sadar Hills and Motbung Youth Club represented the CSOs of Kangpokpi.

The meeting resolved the issue without any condition on humanitarian ground while it also decided that the departmental enquiry initiated upon the Post Commander of Motbung Police Outpost SI, Lenginthang Misao shall be withdrawn following the understanding and compromise reached between the two parties.

It had also resolved that the CSOs and both the concerned party shall request the Kangpokpi SP to take necessary action as per the agreement and compromise made in the joint meeting.

Meanwhile, a theologian from Kangpokpi District alleged Sekmai police of displaying highhandedness and undisciplined attitude while enforcing curfew at Kanglatongbi yesterday.

Speaking to media persons, Jangkholun Haokip, a theologian at Manipur Theological College Kangpokpi alleged that he was physically assaulted and verbally abused by personnel of Sekmai police at Kanglatongbi.

Jangkholun Haokip stated that he was detained by police personnel of Sekmai PS for violating curfew and asked to pay a fine of Rs 400 at Kanglatongbi near Chil Chil Asian College entry junction along the National Highway when he was on his way to Imphal for an emergency at around 3 pm.

"If a curfew was imposed, why was it not for everyone as it was seen that many other vehicles and people are moving freely on the road while I was detained for violating Curfew", said Jangkholun Haokip.

He alleged that one of the ASI manhandled him when he questioned why other vehicles and people were not detained for violating Curfew except for him.
