Wave-off final exams: Resident doctors of India moves SC
Representative Image. MUMBAI: A resident doctor has moved the Supreme Court asking for the cancellation of the final post graduate exams across the nation.
In his petition, Dr Shashidhar A has stated that the majority of the covid hospitals in our country were functioning because of resident doctors, and over the past 16 months, most had not taken a break.
He added that expecting resident doctors to clear an exam in the current scenario would be a form of "obstinate hypocrisy". Praying for the cancellation of exams, he said, "Instead, if the residents are awarded their well deserved degrees, they would dedicate themselves to saving more lives without having to worry about a final exam. Everyday in the past 16 months of the pandemic has been an exam and hence the formality of final exams must be waived off in this scenario. This has been already done in developed countries like UK & Italy last year itself to allay the requirement of healthcare professionals."
Resident doctors have been demanding the same from the Central Government (MOHFW) and NMC through online petitions and email communication individually and through associations too. "But the authorities have shown no concern and have extended our tenure by 3 months to 1 year for a few specialties and have been exploiting our helplessness. We do not expect any awards for our services except rewarding us with our degrees," added Dr Shashidhar.

"Many of these young doctors were infected in the line of duty, some lost their lives and some are suffering long term sequelae. The residents who had chosen to pursue various specialties ended up serving in covid wards, have now completed their stipulated tenure of three years. In an ideal scenario, they would have cleared the exit exam and moved on to their fields as specialists/superspecialists. However in the current scenario the residents have continued to serve in covid wards to save more lives and thus preparing for the exams have not been their priority. Exam preparation will require months of dedicated study and this would not be possible as they are engaged and engrossed in care of covid patients," the petitioner said.
