Comic actor of Nokphade fame Surmangol no more

Imphal, June 13 2021:
Celebrated comedian Thokchom Surmangol, who has acted in many Manipur feature films and a key figure of Nokphade series, succumbed to COVID-19, today.
He was 41.Artistes of Nokphade also observed silence for two minutes to mourn the demise of Surmangol during a virtual condolence meeting.
At the meeting, producer of Nokphade, Thoudam Ruhinikumar said that the demise of Surmangol is a great loss to the artistes fraternity of Manipur.
He prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
In its condolence message, the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) described Surmangol as a comedian with originality and good narrating skills.
He made his first TV appearance in Part-V of the Nokphade series and gradually carved a niche for himself in Manipuri cinema as an actor in a comic role.
Surmanongol, a resident of Thoubal Keshtri Leikai left behind two daughters.
The society's secretary, Sunzu Bachaspatimayum, while sharing the grievances of the bereaved family, termed the passing of Surmangol as a big loss for Manipuri Cinema.
The MSFDS also mourned the death of the producer of Lucy Thoibi (2019), Wahengbam Basanta Singh, who succumbed to kidney failure on May 24, 2021 at his residence at Porompat Thawan Thaba Leikai.
In the memory of the two departed souls, candles were lit at the Manipuri Cinema Memorial at MSFDS complex this evening, said the message.
Altogether the film community of Manipur has lost eight of its members - Th Surmangol, RK Bidur; Wahengbam Basanta Singh, Dr Thiyam Suresh Singh, Irom Maipak, Hem Athokpam, Sagolsem Romio Meitei and Em Kay Jeet in the last few days.
