Building on its Over-The-Top service, Netflix has announced an exciting new way to monetise its content. The subscription-based streaming service has launched an online store to sell merchandise related to its favourite online shows.
The e-commerce store by Netflix will sell limited-edition apparel, collectables and other merchandise based on shows like "Stranger Things," "Lupin", and more. The company announced the launch of the online store last week for its users in the US. Subsequent rollout in other countries is to start in the coming months.
The new online store will be accessible online through Netflix.shop and will serve as a direct gateway for fans of Netflix shows to buy related products. Prior to this, merchandise related to select Netflix shows were sold through retail partners like Target and Walmart.
The launch of the new store marks Netflix's own attempt to enter the merchandise space. The company says that the items debuting this month will include "streetwear and action figures based on anime series Yasuke and Eden." In addition, there will be limited-edition apparel and decorative items inspired by Netflix's thriller series Lupin, in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre.
The debut of the online store is also introducing a collection of anime-inspired collectables from up-and-coming designers. Going forward, Netflix will also bring exclusive products from titles like The Witcher and Stranger Things. In addition, there will be a new Netflix logo-wear from Japanese fashion house BEAMS. Netflix says that it will update its line of merchandise on a regular basis.
The e-commerce platform will provide a Netflix shopping experience to fans while opening yet another revenue option for the streaming service. With increased competition in the OTT space with each passing day, the merchandise store might be Netflix's edge over the competition in the time to come.
