World Wind Day 2021: Significance, history and how the day is celebrated

World Wind Day or Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that is held every year on June 15. It is celebrated to inform about wind energy, it's power and the possibilities it holds to change the world.

Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy such as using wind turbines to make electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage or sails to propel ships.

Wind power, as an alternative to fossil fuels is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and uses little land.

World Wind Day is organised by WindEurope and Global Wind Energy Council. It is believed that wind energy may possibly be able to change the world. National wind energy associations and companies involved in wind energy production organise events in many countries around the world.

In 2011, there were events organised in 30 countries on 4 continents. The events included visits to onshore and offshore wind farms, information campaigns, demonstration turbines being set up in cities, wind workshops and a wind parade.

In 2012, there were 250 events around the globe and a very popular photo competition.

The inaugural year of Wind Day was organised by EWEA. The main idea was to co-ordinate events organised by national wind energy associations and companies active in the wind energy field. Wind Day in 2007 reached 18 countries in Europe, with a participation of around 35,000 people.
