FT: North Melbourne 14.10 (94) draw GWS Giants 14.10 (94)

By Roy Ward

Former North Melbourne coach Denis Pagan liked to describe draws as like dancing with your sister and both the Kangaroos and GWS Giants will understand that phrase after drawing in Hobart today.

The Kangaroos will fell hollow as they had a 28-point lead going into the last term and failed to keep it, they can blame youth or a wonderful final fling from the Giants but they need to look internally at whatever led to conceding the goals they did and failing to finish the job.

The Giants were poor early in the first, poor early in the second and off the mark in the third term as the Roos took what should have been a match-winning lead.

But they took all before them in the last term as Toby Greene, Harry Himmelberg and Daniel Lloyd came up huge to make sure their side had a chance at victory when they should have been out of it.

Lloyd had a highly pressured chance to kick a behind late and take the win but his kick faded out of bounds on the full. It was a tough situation for a player who kicked two late goals to tie scores.

Both sides will be hurting. Both have a bright future but tonight they will walk away with very little to be happy about.

It’s a draw!

Daniel Lloyd had a snap from right on the boundary and it went wide and out of the full.

He was almost out of bounds with lots of pressure but he will be disappointed he couldn’t find a point.

We have a draw.

Everyone looks flat as a tack.

Lloyd again!

Daniel Lloyd has come up with a mark in front of the goal square after a centring kick from Shane Mumford.

He kicked the goal and pumped his fist.

The scores are tied and the Roos are looking very shaky.

It’s 94-94 with 1:17 to go.

Time now the enemy for Giants

Himmelberg’s second goal has given the Giants a chance to steal this match but the Roos are pushing players back and competing strongly with four minutes to go.

Zurhaar snaps a cracker

The Roos needed a boost and Zurhaar has come up with a cracker running past two defenders and snapping with his right boot and chest out proud.

He had a little celebration too. That was a moment.

Roos lead 94-76 with nine minutes to play.

Giants get within 10 points

Bobby Hill has come up with an invaluable goal to bring the Giants within 10 points with 11 minutes to go.

Roos up 87-76 with 11 mins to play.

Himmelberg kicks another

Harry Himmelberg has followed up Kelly’s goal with a major of his own to make this a very compelling finale.

The Giants are alive here, the Roos need to respond.

Roos up 85-69 with 18 mins to go.

Kelly with a wonder goal

Josh Kelly has kicked a brilliant snap from the right boundary line with his right foot to give the Giants a huge boost to open this last term.

It may not be goal of the season but it will be in the conversation. Kelly has been sublime today with 31 touches.

The Roos lead 85-63 with 19 mins to go.
